A Giving Business - Philanthropy in Alaska's Engineering Sector
A new Exchange feature for 2008, A Giving Business is a monthly philanthropy summary of companies and organizations featured in Alaska Business Monthly magazine. Coffman Engineers
Coffman will consider all requests on a case-by-case basis, though under most circumstances an employee must sponsor the request. Exceptions are occasionally made. Coffman’s giving focus is in communities with a company presence. The company’s past giving includes employee volunteers, donation of services/technical expertise and general cash donations, though they will consider other types of support. Coffman gives approximately $10,000 annually, with grants ranging between $150 and $1000. No phone calls; submit all requests by mail or email.

Doyon Emerald (Emerald Consulting)
Doyon Emerald is a subsidiary of Doyon, Limited, one of thirteen Alaska Native regional corporations in the state. The Doyon Foundation, established by Doyon, Limited, assists original Doyon shareholders and their descendants by providing scholarships, grants and internship opportunities. EEIS Consulting Engineers
While EEIS considers requests on a case-by-case basis, they do not accept unsolicited requests. An employee or client must sponsor the request. They offer project-specific cash support, donation of services/technical expertise, and employee volunteers. Annual giving averages $5,000, and grants are in the $200 range. Requests must be sent by mail or email, with sufficient detail to allow company to make an informed decision.

The Golder Trust for Orphans was established by the multi-national Golder Associates Corporation to help improve the quality of life of children who have been orphaned or displaced by the AIDS pandemic. One-time grant funding is available to NGO's and other organizations caring for HIV/AIDS orphans, along with equity funding for sustainable development projects. HDR Alaska Inc.
Nationwide, HDR sponsors events that help provide resources for medical research on serious diseases such as cancer and multiple sclerosis; provides funds for homeless shelters and food banks; supports community arts and improvement projects; and supports educational programs for youth. They offer scholarships to promising students in the architecture-engineering industry, fellowships to selected universities and an internship program. HDR offices also coordinate United Way fundraising campaigns. Funding decisions are regionalized as much as possible. In Alaska, requests should be sent to the Anchorage office.
